The ACSM and AFNA
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is the largest sports medicine organization in the world with over 50,000 members representing more than 70 disciplines in sports medicine and exercise science. Founded in 1954, it has led and promoted research in human fitness and performance for six decades.
The ACSM was the first to create the Standards of Certification for the profession of personal training in the mid-1970s and remains the gold standard for fitness trainer certification today. Widely considered the most thorough and academically disciplined curriculum in the field of exercise science. ACSM textbooks, clinical guides, and member-published research form the backbone of education science programs in 90% of the nation’s four-year colleges and universities.
ACSM certifications are the only fitness training credentials that enjoy widespread international recognition, and ACSM Certified Personal Trainers are among the most respected in the field. Unlike other Personal Trainer Certifications, the ACSM Certified Personal Trainer credential need only be renewed every three years, instead of the industry standard two.
The American Fitness and Nutrition Academy provides context-based instruction and hands-on training built on ACSM curriculum, including the FITT-VP model of exercise program design and progression. Graduates of the AFNA’s Diploma Fitness and Nutrition Trainer Academy are well-prepared for the ACSM Certified Personal Trainer exam and are scheduled to take the exam at no additional expense.
AFNA is also a member of the Southwest ACSM Regional Chapter.
